    "Early" vs. "Late" 2004 Ford F250 ?

    Hi all,

I read a couple of posts awhile back, which stated that the "early" 2004 F-250 (diesel only?) trucks had a serious problem, and to only buy "late" 2004 trucks, or newer. I've found a 2004 Lariat diesel online that looks good, and I have the VIN. Is there anyway to tell when it was built, other than looking at stickers on the vehicle? The dealer is in another state, and doesn't have a toll-free number.

    Thanks for any info!

With the VIN inhand, you should be able to go to any Ford dealer and ask them to run an OASIS report. This will provide you with a history of the vehicle similar to a CARFAX report.

Hit the various Diesel forums to gather information on a particular year/model diesel truck. The Diesel Stop, Turbo Diesel Forum, PowerStroke.org, The PowerStroke Registry are some decent pages to start with.

Re: "Early" vs. "Late" 2004 Ford F250 ?

I've discovered that the truck was manufactured/delivered to the dealer in May 2004. That would make it one of the "late" ones. I'm researching the diesel sites now.

Thanks for the info, as always. :O)

Re: "Early" vs. "Late" 2004 Ford F250 ?

I think very late 04s or 05's to present for sure came with a much better transmission (Torqshift 5 speed) compaired to the 4 speed.

Mid year 2003 is when the 7.3L was replaced with the 6.0L as the offered diesel. My January '03 produced 6.0L has the Torqshift while early '03s with the 7.3L had the 4-speed transmission.

Re: "Early" vs. "Late" 2004 Ford F250 ?

I have a May 2005 manufactured F250 6.0L and it has the model 2006 setup, I would think you have the late model 2004 for sure. They have removed the throttle body on the EGR recirc line with a ventury on the late model as the 2005 has. You can look by your EGR valve and observe no electrical connection or actuator on the inlet air by the EGR Valve.

Re: "Early" vs. "Late" 2004 Ford F250 ?

The late model 2004 may also have front coils as opposed to leaf springs. This makes a HUGE difference in the way that the truck drives and rides. Also get bigger front discs and a sharper turning radius. I know this changed for the 05's, but was thinking maybe late 04's got it too.
