TST 507 model Tpms batteries and o-rings

Thought I'd start a separate post here for future searches.
Out of my 10 sensors that I received last year at the June rally, I have one that is not transmitting.

Took it apart and the battery is dead.
When taking it apart to check the battery the o-ring fell apart, about 5 pieces.

Called TST, was told that is to be expected.
They are sending me 10 o-rings at no charge (I want to change all the batteries).

So keep that in mind, get your required amount of o-rings in advance if you don't want to be stuck waiting.

And, I found batteries at a reasonable cost on eBay. 10 batteries for $10.45 shipped.

Re: TST 507 model Tpms battereis and o-rings

So far, every time I've replaced one of the original batteries, the o-ring has come out in pieces. I guess they must just dry out after a while. I couldn't believe how much the replacement o-rings will stretch when putting them on. At first, i looked at how small they are and thought they would never fit but they do. They must be a special material.

Before I ordered mine, I had read about the o-ring problem. I voiced my concern when I ordered, and they are sending me extra's just in case!!!!!

I have always had good luck with O-rings by applying a thin coating of silicone grease to the ring. It helps with the sealing and seems to keep them from drying out. The proper grease will look clear to opaque white and should not have any petroleum products in it. Give it a try.

I guess if you think about it, one time use o-rings means you will always be using a fresh o-ring and sealing will not be an issue, as long as you install it correctly.

I suppose in the long run, supplying customers with an annual shipment of o-rings at new charge is cheaper then replacing failed sensors under warranty.

    Duane,

What type of sensor do you have? The external ones or internal ones? I am looking into buying TST but not sure which way I want to go?

Good Idea! I wonder if plumbers lube will have the same result. I'll have to look at the tube for content info.

Re: TST 507 model Tpms battereis and o-rings

I would use whatever the manufacturer recommends.
And absent of any recommendation, if I was to use a lube, it would be food grade silicone.

Using the silicone the best way is a "very small" dab between thumb and index finger, rub it around to just barely a film, then work the o-ring till it just has a coating. This o-ring is rather small and thin.
I would think from past experience of using silicone grease in various SCUBA applications, you are looking for an application where the o-ring looks "wet" and has no clumps of grease.

Too much grease can force the ring out of position as you tighten the cap.

I am using the 507 model with the screw on external sensors. I have not seen the internal version yet.
And, if the internal versions are the same price at $50 each, adding the cost at a tire shop to install, I think I will be passing.

For me, I use the trailer sensors on two different trailers, so internals would not help there.
The truck would be a different story if they were reasonably priced.
I currently leave the sensors on the wheels most of the time. Especially helpful with the rear wheels.

Duane, just ordered the batteries myself from your link to Ebay... Seams like a good deal and as you said, no shipping charge to boot! Now, guess I better call TST and pick up some orings too. Thanks for the heads up!
