We had our cooling unit go on our fridge a couple years ago. When Harry took the cover off on the outside where the vent is there was a yellow discharge of chromate that was visible. Our fridge was still working at that point but when Harry called our rv repair shop they advised him to shut it off immediately as that discharge is a fire hazard. We have been told that it smells like ammonia, although we did not smell it ourselves.

I would get an rv tech to look at it, but the cooling unit will probably have to be replaced. There is a 2 year manufacturers warranty on it also.

Thanks for the help...is this fixable??

Sounds like the cooling unit is leaking and will need to be replaced. We've seen a few posts recently about Norcolds with cooling unit failures within 24 months. Norcold warrants the unit and any Norcold authorized servicer should be able to provide warranty service. If you're out of warranty on the fridge, I'd suggest discussing with Norcold to see what they say about early life failures of the cooling units.
