Here's a neat idea I saw on a neighbors RV. To help secure your awning in windy conditions, and in addition to hold down straps, add these support columns. I made mine from paint pole extenders and a 4" PVC pipe cut in half with a 1/2" adapter glued on for the pole to rest in.
