Bed design weak - repair photos

We have hydraulic slides in our 2011 BH 3670 including the bedroom slide. The DW used the space under the bed to store some sewing supplies. While traveling, the items shifted and moved into harm's way between moving parts under the bed. Perhaps it is designed to fail first, but the connection between the bed and the slide collapsed with very little effort when we extended the slide. The bed support is held together with only thin staples and, as the pictures show, form a rectangle. There are no cross bars to form a rigid triangle.
The fix was to put it all back together with wood screws and to make it all rigid with plywood attached to the entire assembly. To avoid this in the future, we intend to use a large storage tub to slide back and forth with the bed.
Yes, the damage was our fault, but it sure broke easily. The little plastic tub that got caught in the mechanism was undamaged, not even a mark.
What was also surprising to me is the fact that the bed needs to flex as the slide moves in and out. As the picture shows, the bottom of the slide moves first as it extends, flexing the bed.
Bottom line, for those with the same or similar bed slides, use caution when using the space under the bed for storage and make sure that nothing can move into harms way.

Not sure how you managed to break the bed or get the tote caught unless it got up under the headboard area, but I modified the main area by cutting a piece of the thin sheet next to the slide mechanism frame. The tote is slightly taller than the mechanism framing, so it can't move sideways and just slides with the bed movement.

The tote got caught between the foot of the bed frame and the inside slide support. What you describe about your mod sounds like a good approach.

Now I understand what happened. One of those "Oh Poop! moments. Don't feel too bad. I once broke one of the mirrored cabinet doors by extending the slide. Doing some maintenance and wanted something just inside the cabinet. Later decided to move the slide out at the pump manifold but forgot I left the door ajar. SNAP, SHUDDER and I had a broken door frame, but the mirror was OK. Fixed it up good as new.

When doing repairs on the carpentry in my Bighorn, I like to add metal corner plates at wood junctions wherever possible to re-enforce the staple gun connections the factory makes. While you have the bed assembly apart, this would be an opportune time to do this.

Duane,
Yea, it would have been good if I had spotted your post before starting on our bed, but I guess I still would have done it the same way. What had broken was a mystery to me until I got it apart.
