Looks like a magnet spring to me.

Here is how the hub/drum looked after tear down, minus one spring..i didnt get to see where the broken spring came from or what it looked like. All looks normal, guess it was just metal fatigue in the spring. So Heartland and Leppert will be sending out an entire new backing plate assembly and cover repair cost. So far I am liking this.

Since your picture does not show the bottom of the assembly,,, I assume the spring came from across the shoe adjuster. Both of the brakeshoe return springs are in place, so that only leaves the spring that goes across the adjuster screw assembly. I hope one was reinstalled.

Looks like the adjuster spring is still there, I still think its the spring from the back of the magnet.
