The long way will probably be the shortest and least eventful route.
North to Chat, then Knoxville then around the mountain south to Maggie Valley. Staying on the interstates as much as possible to where 40 starts to head east.
Where in Maggie Valley are you going to?
Following a GPS I would avoid any route that has you using 129 or 19 west of Maggie valley.
