Newbies that have questions

We are brand new to the TT world and are looking at purchasing our very first TT in a few weeks. We are looking at a 2009 North Trail by Heartland RV 31 ft Camper for $xxxx, and seller is willing to come down to $xxxx. What are the main things we should be looking for besides leaks and damage? We noticed some small warping at the front but until we look at it in person we won't be able to tell what its from. TT is 2 hours away from here so we want to make sure we are armed with all that we need to know and what we need to look for.

Here is the link for the TT we are interested in:

Hi mike_mandy_hanson,

Welcome to the Heartland Owners Forum.

Based just on age, you should plan on replacing all tires, regardless of how they look. Trailer tires get weak and at this age are likely to fail soon.

Also, unless the previous owner has service records showing a recent inspection of bearings and brakes, you should plan on getting the bearings repacked and perhaps replaced. Brakes could need work as well depending on usage. You won't know exactly what's needed until a tech takes things apart. But you can be sure they need to be checked and bearings repacked at a minimum.

I'm sure others will chime in with additional suggestions.

If there is warping on the front cap that could possibly indicate a delamination issue. This is usually caused by water intrusion due to poor caulking along where the front cap and roof come together. Repairing a delamination problem can be costly as there could be rotten wood under the laminate. Check very carefully.

Mike and Mandy, if you get your North Trail in time, please consider coming to the Missouri chapter rally in Carthage on Sept. 11-13. We have an introductory club membership that is free so you can check out the club, meet some great people and if you have questions about your new rig, there will be plenty of people to answer you. Come by even if you can't get the trailer and say hello.
