No power on one leg

We started our 5500 Onan genset as we do monthly and found one leg of power doesn't work when the gen is running. When we powered the gen off, power returned. Any ideas?

That was it! Reset and started the gen and was able to maintain power on both legs. Thanks danemayer!

You have a transfer switch. Check all the connections to make sure that they are not loose. Then, if you have a voltage/surge protector, check for loose connections there. After that check the main power connections at the breaker panel. Though it would not cause the failure that you have, if you happen to have a power reel, unplug and pull the cord all the way out and remove the access hatch. Power connections inside have been known to loosen. Don't ask me why I know!
