smell from air conditioner normal?

I'm noticing a smell coming from the air conditioner when I first turn it on every day. Wondering if this is normal and okay, or if there's something we need to be cleaning out. It's kind of unpleasant, kind of musty smelling. I don't remember smelling it other years. Any one else notice this with their air conditioner? Thanks.

Have you cleaned the filter? Would also check on roof and ensure the condensation is draining away from the unit.

In Florida we went away for a week and returned to a musty smelling A/C.Asked an A/C guy and he said its normal because the standing water evaporated leaving a musty smell.The odour disappeared in a day of continual usage.

We've never had an A/C smell.
May be water but I can't imagine anything normal about it.

Sometimes the evaporator will mildew/mold in high humidity climates. Find a HVAC service and ask them for coil cleaner. You spray it on the evaporator let it soak, then run the unit. The condensation will rinse it off.

You probably need to clean your drain pan and weep holes in the A/C unit.
