Re: No 12 volt power available when disconnected from shore power

Pulled 12volt panel. Checked voltage on the two large cables coming into the main breaker. Both the red cable (from battery mini breaker I think) and the black cable show fluctuating voltages between zero and 5 volts.

You are not plugged into shore power right ?

Yes I was plugged in. I unplugged and checked voltages again - which are now zero.

At the breaker you were getting the Voltage back from the convertor
Check it at the breaker I'm sure it has to be that breaker

Shore power off
red on battery positive post - black on hot post of breaker - 12.57 volts
red on battery positive post - black on output post of breaker - 12.57 volts
black on battery neg post - red on hot post of breaker - 4.6 volts
black on battery neg post - red on output side of breaker - 4.6 volts

Seems like breaker is working??

If your putting the red on the positive post of the battery and the black on the breaker and your getting a voltage reading you have a problem in-between there.
I'll PM my number and talk ya through what I know

These readings don't make sense to me.

With shore power off,

Red lead on battery positive post, Black lead on hot post of breaker - should read 0, not 12.57 V.

The reading you got tells me that power is not getting from the battery to the breaker.

Black lead on battery negative post, Red lead on hot post of breaker - should read 12.57 V, not 4.6 V.

Again, this reading indicates a problem getting power to the breaker.

Can you get the red probe of your meter on the battery cutoff switch, with the black lead on the negative post of the battery? There should be 2 terminals on the cutoff switch. With switch ON, you should read 12V at either one.

If you're on the positive of the battery and the circuit breaker posts it should read 00.0

Way to go Jerrod.

WRT to the Main Breaker - are you saying there's another manual resetting mini circuit breaker in the line? Which side of the master shut off switch was it on (breaker bus or battery)?

The battery cable goes from the battery to this breaker then from there to the master shutoff switch. 50amp auto reset breaker.

Ah - so a stuck open, auto-resetter.

For right now he bypassed that breaker and all is working fine.
He's going to pickup a new breaker ASAP. The cable comes out of the master switch straight into the row of breakers so I don't think he has anything to worry about.
But he is going to replace it.

I should of told him to hit it with a hammer that always fixes everything.

I would have given it a "love tap" :) I'd still get a replacement, but if a love tap brought it back to life to save the trip - ya me!

Great job Jerrod !!! -- and thanks to all those who offered help earlier today. People who respond to these "distress calls" are the greatest customer service group out there. Gotta love this forum. Gotta love Heartland.
