Taking our first long trip in our Big Country in June 2014. Leaving from Chicago. Would appreciate any tips (restaurants, route, rv parks, etc.)
Thanks

Being from TN, I'm not sure exactly what you need. Are you looking for general campgrounds in the mountains of East Tennessee or a specific area like Pigeon Forge/Sevierville? The Smokies cover a large area.

This will be our first visit. We are not into Dollywood but want to stay close to smokies to see the sites. We are not hikers. WE would like full hookup, no dry camping or state/national park. Near Gatlinburg would be nice or Townsend.
Thanks for the reply. It was our first post.

We prefer Townsend over Gatlinburg for camping. Gatlinburg has one or two nice campgrounds on the north (Newport side) side but with a big rig, I wouldn't go there. When we had a smaller camper they were fine. Townsend has a KOA park [http://koa.com/campgrounds/townsend-great-smokies/] (a few big rig sites) but we stay at Big Meadows (mostly big rig sites) http://www.bigmeadowcampground.com/. There are a couple of others in Townsend which might be ok but we haven't used them. In Pigeon Forge, oh my, there are more than you can shake a stick at but we stay at River Plantation http://rvcoutdoors.com/river-plantation/?gclid=CN-K1KGx77wCFbQWMgodsCsA1Q on the Sevierville side of PF. It has just been bought out and they have done some major renovations to the good. If you want to go halfway between Pigeon Forge and Townsend to Wears Valley, there is a nice fairly new park called Cove Creek RV Resort (www.covecreekrvresort.com). This is where the TN rally is being held this year. Hope this helps.

Great place to visit with more than enough to keep you occupied. We've stayed in here in Townsend http://www.tremontcamp.com/ great park sits right on the border to the park. Some of the sites are waterfront, with covered decks. Facilities are nice and it's reasonably priced. If you are into fishing Townsend is the place to be because you can be on the water in mins. either in or outside of the park. If you take the road into the park and hang a left it will take you to Gatlinburg. Be warned though it is a narrow curvey road, but well worth the drive for the views. If you go into the park and hang a right it will take you to Cades Cove which is also something to see. Other than that though Townsend is lacking in most of the shopping/tourist/etc of Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg. As Byrd said earlier, I wouldn't recommend pulling a trailer through Gatlinburg to get to the campgrounds on the north side, it's just to tight and the traffic is horrible. Pigeon Forge is nice in addition to the ones she mentioned, there is a place called Bear Cove Village, the sites are a little tight but the park is nice. It's located on Vetrans which is like a super highway compared to the parkway through Pigeon Forge.

We have been staying at Rivers Edge the past few years as it is located on the southend of Piegoen Forge 2nd stoplight before you go up the hill to Gatlinburg. The park is right off the strip so easy access to all the attractions/ resturants as well as short distance to National Park and Gatlinburg. We just love the area because of the variety of things to do. As for resturants there are plenty in PF/Sevierville. The Dixie Stampeed is a very good dinner show. There is a pancake house on at the entrance to the Rivers Edge campground that has awesome breakfasts. It is one of those places that dont like like much but has great food. The chicken n biscuits are awesome. BTW ...welcome to the forum.
